Proof-of-work, the algorithm that underpins Bitcoin, is a fundamentally wasteful process. Even during the Satoshi era, people realized that if Bitcoin was successful, the hash power for network security would be enormous. Satoshi anticipated this debate and responded to critics: “It would be ironic if we ended up having to choose between economic freedom and conservation.”
