The Solana-powered Jupiter airdrop has generated significant excitement, driving decentralized exchange (DEX) trading activity on layer-1 blockchain networks beyond Ethereum.
According to data from DeFillama, Solana-based DEXs facilitated a total of $1.14 billion in transactions in the past 24 hours, surpassing the roughly $1.13 billion traded on Ethereum-based platforms during the same period.
This achievement highlights the incredible growth and widespread adoption witnessed within Solana’s DeFi ecosystem and captures the attention of the cryptocurrency community. In particular, last December, Solana DEX became the first to surpass Ethereum, thanks to increased memecoin and stablecoin activity.
While the daily numbers show Solana’s temporary lead, it is important to note that the Solana-based DEX’s weekly trading volume of $6.113 billion is slightly behind Ethereum’s $7.852 billion.
Jupiter Airdrop
On January 31, decentralized exchange aggregator Jupiter ran a high-profile airdrop, distributing approximately $700 million worth of its native token, JUP, to nearly a million wallets. The trading platform is the most dominant protocol on Solana, facilitating $11 billion worth of transactions in January.
The airdrop garnered significant attention from the cryptocurrency community and was quickly listed on major centralized exchanges such as Bybit and Binance. On its first trading day, the asset recorded an impressive trading volume of over $1.4 billion, pushing the token value to a high of $0.72 before closing at $0.62 as of press time, according to CoinMaketCap data.
Onchain Investigator Lookonchain Confirmed Three airdrop participants earned more than $1 million. These individuals collectively airdropped 5.5 million JUP tokens worth approximately $3.6 million, distributing them to approximately 27,600 wallets.
The Jupiter token launch and airdrop significantly increased activity on the Solana network. In particular, Phantom, a web 3 wallet, reported Unprecedented traffic levels have tripled total volume since the recent launch of the WEN meme token.
Blockchain analytics firm Artemis corroborated this, noting that anticipation of the airdrop drove Solana’s active addresses to over 1 million earlier this week.
Despite the surge in activity, Solana’s network has shown excellent stability, dispelling concerns about potential downtime that have plagued the network in the past.
