In a recent call to the Ethereum community, Ryan Berckmans, a veteran member of the Ethereum ecosystem, investor, and engineer, raised an urgent alarm about the possibility of a catastrophic failure within the Ethereum network if Ethereum is not included in the upcoming Pectra hard fork. I did. Enhancement Proposal (EIP) 7251, known as “maxeb”. This proposal seeks to address serious vulnerabilities in the network’s ability to handle increasing numbers of staked ETH by allowing greater integration of validators.

Ethereum’s catastrophic scenario

Berckmans spoke out through X (formerly Twitter). his worries, “Pectra, the next hard fork of Ethereum, must include EIP-7251 (“maxeb”)… Without maxeb in pectra, Ethereum has no realistic possibility of the ETH % staked increasing to ~50%+ before the future. There is no line of defense. ~Hard fork after Pectra in 2026.” He emphasizes the seriousness of the situation by pointing out the consequences of inaction: “Without Maxep, the worst-case scenario could potentially be disastrous for Ethereum.”

EIP-7251 proposes to increase a validator’s maximum effective balance from the current limit of 32 ETH to unlimited. This adjustment is designed to mitigate the risks associated with overly fragmented validator pools, which could ultimately compromise the stability of the beacon chain.

The need for such action is highlighted in Berckmans’ description of the technical challenges facing the network. “Base layer experts advise that increasing staked ETH above ~50% will result in severe and catastrophic beacon chain instability. It’s not designed for that many validators.”

Berckmans elaborated on the technical impracticality of modifying the beacon chain within the Pectra hard fork period to support higher percentages of staked ETH, saying: Pectra is absolutely impossible. Long-term solutions are still in the research phase.”

Meaning of ‘Maxep’

This proposal is not simply a stopgap measure, but a strategic improvement to reduce the number of validators without compromising the decentralized spirit of the network or changing monetary policy. “Fortunately, EIP-7251 maxeb is somewhat ready and achieves the goal of reducing the number of validators, not changing monetary policy or issuance,” Berckmans emphasizes.

He also dismissed concerns that EIP-7251 might disproportionately benefit large staking operators or change the network’s reward structure. “maxeb does not change minting or staking rewards… maxeb is not a monetary policy change… ”

Berckmans also highlights the operational benefits maxeb offers, especially for staking operators currently managing multiple validators. (ii) maxeb can reduce DevOps costs and complexity for staking operators by allowing them to run one validator instead of tens or tens of thousands of validators.”

Berckmans concludes with a call to action, emphasizing the important nature of this decision for the future of Ethereum. Reduce the number of validators by overshooting (halting Ethereum) or making an emergency large-scale change to monetary policy (dramatically reducing staking rewards). Let’s protect Ethereum by including maxeb in Pectra.”

BTC and ETH Communities Clash

Despite the technical rationale of EIP-7251, the proposal has drawn critical response from the broader cryptocurrency community, particularly Bitcoin supporters. Checkmatey, lead on-chain analyst at Glassnode, said: offer Critical views, commentary,

People wonder why ETH is not considered the same institutional grade, high resilience status as BTC. This may partly have to do with the ‘catastrophic failure’ mode not being considered. (…) It would be quite surprising if a Proof-of-Stake network was designed to become unstable when too many people **check notes**. pile… ?

At press time, ETH was trading at $3,770.
