The BNB Greenfield network is preparing for the Ural hardfork, which aims to improve user experience and storage provider performance within the BNB Chain ecosystem.

The BNB Greenfield network is preparing for the highly anticipated Ural hardfork, which promises to bring a variety of exciting updates and improvements to the platform. The mainnet Ural hard fork is scheduled to occur at block height 5,347,231, which is expected to occur on March 14 at 7:00 AM UTC based on the current block interval.

To ensure a smooth transition, validators and storage providers (SPs) are encouraged to upgrade their software to the latest version before the hard fork. Validators must be upgraded to greenfield v1.4.0, and SPs must be upgraded to greenfield-storage-provider v1.4.0. It is important to note that the upcoming hard fork will not affect user account balances on Greenfield, and all buckets and objects stored on the Greenfield Testnet will remain accessible.

The Ural hard fork introduces several new features and bug fixes aimed at improving user experience. One notable addition is the ability for authorized accounts to assign tags to resources, as described in PR #563. This feature allows you to better organize and classify data within your Greenfield network.

Storage providers can also benefit from the Ural hard fork through improved bucket migration (PR #1250) and introduction of restrictions on illegal special characters during object creation (PR #1298). These changes are designed to streamline the save process and avoid issues that may arise due to using unsupported characters.

The Ural hard fork is part of BNB Chain’s broader “One BNB” interconnection paradigm, which aims to integrate BNB Smart Chain (BSC), opBNB (L2), and BNB Greenfield into a cohesive ecosystem. This integrated approach ensures seamless interaction between decentralized computing and storage solutions, paving the way for a more efficient and user-friendly blockchain experience.

Looking ahead to 2024, BNB Greenfield plans to redefine the data storage and processing landscape. Outlook for the platform includes developing advanced features such as Greenfield Executable, Atomic Update, and Paymaster (AA), as well as improving the middleware infrastructure, including bundled services and data availability layers.

One of BNB Greenfield’s key goals for 2024 is to significantly improve storage provider performance. The goal is to increase upload speeds from the current 2MB/s to 10MB/s and download speeds from 20MB/s to 100MB/s, a 5x improvement. These improvements aim to significantly improve the overall efficiency of data processing within blockchain networks.

As the BNB chain continues to evolve and expand, the Ural hard fork represents an important milestone in our ongoing efforts to provide users with a seamless and effective platform. By introducing new features, resolving bugs, and responding to community feedback, BNB Greenfield is establishing itself as a leader in the decentralized storage space.
