March 11th Bitfinex Alpha | ETF flows continue while speculation about dogs, cats and AI tokens grows.
On Bitfinex Alpha
Bitcoin reached $72,007 on March 11 (at the time of writing), hitting another all-time high. This is a cause for celebration for long-term investors, but a challenge for short-term traders and risk takers. These sharp market movements resulted in significant liquidations for traders with long and short positions. Last week alone, BTC hit its all-time high on March 5th, when the price recovered and the ensuing reversal led to the liquidation of nearly $900 million worth of buys, the highest one-day price in three years.
However, underlying spot demand for BTC remains strong, as evidenced by the continued significant inflows into spot Bitcoin ETFs. Despite the volatility of March 5, ETF inflows were the highest in March on the same day, showing continued interest from investors.
The altcoin sector is also witnessing a significant resurgence, with the Total3 index rising to over $720 billion in terms of market capitalization. The rise reflects growing interest not only in AI-related projects, but also in alternative cryptocurrencies, with a unique and enigmatic focus on Meme coins. In particular, the AI field is showing explosive interest and development, with new projects being launched and existing projects expanding, highlighting the potential for synergy between AI and blockchain.
Speculation about dog-and-cat-themed tokens also abounded, and trading volume for tokens on the Solana blockchain, on which some Meme tokens are based, increased, approaching Ethereum levels. On Ethereum itself, trading fees have risen sharply due to increased trading activity for DEX tokens, which are now on track to hit $10 billion in annual revenue for the first time since early 2022. The transactions we are seeing in the Meme token are amazing to say the least.
In the broader macroeconomy, growth in the services industry slowed but was balanced by a significant increase in new orders. Inflation is showing signs of easing as the corporate input price index has fallen from recent highs. Nonetheless, the job market remains strong, with job postings holding steady and continuing to challenge the Federal Reserve’s goal of cooling the market and considering interest rate cuts.
The latest employment figures show the U.S. economy added an impressive 275,000 jobs in February, evidence of continued labor demand. Nonetheless, there are signs that the labor market may be starting to cool, with unemployment rising slightly along with slower wage growth.
In cryptocurrency news last week, South Korea’s Bitcoin market witnessed a notable increase in the kimchi premium to its highest in 27 months, while El Salvador’s Bitcoin investment also paid off, with its holdings now worth 105 million won. It exceeded 10 million dollars. $50 million profit. This is an important milestone for the country adopting Bitcoin as its fiat currency.
On the regulatory front, the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) has decided to postpone its ruling on the listing and trading approval of Bitcoin ETF options on the Chicago Board Options Exchange and other trading platforms until the end of April. Finally, in a significant legal development, the US state of Wyoming passed legislation granting legal status to Decentralized Autonomous Organizations (DAOs), marking an important step in integrating blockchain initiatives into formal legal structures.
Have a great trading week!
