AI and LLM Transforming Cybersecurity

Generative AI and Large Language Models (LLMs) have the potential to bring significant change to the field of cybersecurity. This was the focus of a recent discussion between a16z general partner Zane Lackey and a16z partners Joel de la Garza and Derrick Harris on the AI + a16z podcast.

They explained why the AI hype is legitimate in this context, as it can help security teams cut through the noise and automate tasks that often lead to mistakes. Lackey noted that many security teams are excited about the potential that AI and LLMs can have to alleviate their workloads.

Challenges and Opportunities of Security-Based Models

Discussing security-based models, de la Garza highlighted the reluctance of companies to share security data to train these models. This reluctance stems from the sensitive nature of such data, as it often includes incidents that companies want to keep confidential.

But de la Garza also noted that the infrastructure needed to run these models has improved significantly. He said the launch of the open source model is driving meaningful open source development and opening the door to many innovations.

A CISO’s Perspective on AI in Cybersecurity

Lackey also spoke about the Chief Information Security Officer’s (CISO) perspective on the impact of generative AI on organizations and the industry as a whole. He suggested that most CISOs understand technology, but struggle to fully understand its implications, including the changes it brings to the threat landscape.

However, this understanding continues to be challenged by the rapid pace of change in the field. Even if CISOs were able to get up to speed a few months ago, the landscape looks very different now and will continue to evolve.
