Former President and Republican front-runner Donald Trump and his campaign announced Tuesday that they will begin accepting cryptocurrency donations. This is the first time a major U.S. political party has adopted digital currency for campaign donations.
The Trump campaign has introduced a fundraising page that allows federally permitted donors to donate using any cryptocurrency accepted on the Coinbase platform.
This could be seen as a sign of President Trump’s continued stance to increasingly embrace financial technology and reduce government control over personal financial decision-making. Trump’s new stance contrasts sharply with the views of Democratic leaders like Sen. Elizabeth Warren, who is building an “anti-encryption army” to limit individual choice.
All contribution limits and disclosure requirements for cryptocurrency donations must comply with Federal Election Commission regulations.
