Ethereum’s expected Pectra upgrade is now scheduled to be released by the end of Q1 2025, according to a recent update from Ethereum developers. Pectra is the next major milestone in the Ethereum development roadmap following the successfully deployed Dencun upgrade in March.

Latest thoughts on the next hard fork after Cancun and Pectra (Prague + Electra):
* Deliver Pectra by the end of the first quarter of 2025.
* Include PeerDAS to extend rollup.
* Includes EOF to improve EVM in both L1 and L2.

This decision was made after Ethereum developers evaluated several timeline scenarios. The team chose not to rush a release before Devcon in November 2024, preferring a more measured approach that would allow for the inclusion of additional, impactful user features.

“We are observing that this is what happened in Cancun as well, so realistically we will aim to launch Prague in the first quarter of 2025. From today’s scope, postponing Prague appears to have minimal impact on users and we may consider expanding. There is scope to include more impactful features for users,” Ethereum developers noted in the document.

Devcon is the largest developer summit in the Asia Pacific region. This year, the event will be held in Bangkok, Thailand from November 12 to 15, and aims to bring together developers, technology leaders, and development tool companies to learn, discuss, and debate key opportunities and challenges in the developer ecosystem.

Avoiding releasing Pectra upgrades before/during Devcon allows your developer team to effectively monitor Pectra execution.

During the deployment of Dencun on the Goerli testnet in January, Ethereum developers had difficulty achieving consensus within the expected time frame. The issue was then resolved, allowing the Goerli testnet to finally reach consensus.

In addition to the upgrade schedule, we are also focusing on improving consensus layer coverage and execution layer coverage. The developers aim to improve Ethereum’s data availability capacity by integrating PeerDAS into Pectra ahead of the Osaka upgrade, as stated in the documentation.

Ethereum’s Osaka upgrade is a future hard fork that is expected to include features previously considered for the Pectra upgrade but postponed. In particular, the Osaka upgrade is likely to include the implementation of the Verkle Tree, a new data structure designed to improve Ethereum’s scalability and decentralization.

Developers also consider other improvements, such as replacing EIP-3074 with EIP-7702 and patching EIP-2935 for better account abstraction compatibility, as well as including EOF to improve smart contract security and developer experience. I did.

“We need ACDE to decide on EIP7702, and if so, it should be implemented as a replacement for EIP-3074. We believe it makes sense to do so because it is a more compatible solution with native AA due to the new transaction types and opcodes,” the Ethereum developers wrote.

EIP-7702 is a new transaction type proposed by a group of prominent Ethereum developers, including Vitalik Buterin, earlier this month. This proposal is expected to provide similar benefits to EIP-3074 while addressing potential risks.
