A Web3 developer shared his unfortunate story of losing his funds after accidentally revealing his wallet keys to developer platform GitHub.
On June 5, Brian Guan, co-founder of Web3 streaming app Unlonely, shared a post on X, claiming he lost $40,000 after making his repository public on GitHub. The developer said he forgot his secret key was in the repository.
When a community member asked how long it took for the funds to run out, the Web3 founder responded that it only took two minutes for someone to withdraw their funds.
Cointelegraph reached out to Guan for comment but has not yet received a response.
Cryptocurrency community sentiment split
When Guan’s post went viral on X, the reaction from the cryptocurrency community was mixed. Some members expressed sympathy for the developer and offered support, while others dug up Guan’s past comments about developers using OpenAI’s chatbot, ChatGPT, to write code.
Commenting on the experience, one community member said they were sorry and hoped Guan would bounce back. But other community members were less charitable.
In 2023, Guan published his opinion on smart contract engineers. According to Guan, the project that pays $200,000 to a smart contract engineer is “ngmi.” This is an abbreviation for “not Going it”. The Web3 founder said that any solid developer “should be able to write solidly with the help of ChatGPT.”
Because of this, community member Foorbar parodied Guan’s previous post, saying that if someone pays $200 for a hardware wallet, they won’t make any money, and developers should be able to store their private keys on GitHub with help. ChatGPT’s
Meanwhile, another user said that while they were sorry for what happened, Guan’s comments to the developer reeked of “Gen Z entitlement.”
