Nearly 90% of Spanish World ID holders support the return of Worldcoin (WLD), according to a recent survey conducted by Tools for Humanity (TFH). The survey, which included more than 21,000 respondents, found that 82% of participants believed World ID was important to online trust.

Voluntary suspension of operations

TFH has voluntarily extended the moratorium on Worldcoin sphere operations in Spain. The goal of this extension is to provide the Bavarian Data Protection Authority (BayLDA) with additional time to complete an audit of Worldcoin’s compliance with the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR). The audit took place over a period of over a year with TFH’s full participation.

TFH has committed not to resume Orb operations in Spain until the end of 2024 or until the BayLDA consultation process with other European Union data protection authorities is completed.

Enhanced privacy and security measures

To address privacy concerns, TFH has implemented several new measures. This includes advanced age verification controls, deletion of existing iris codes by converting them to Secure Multi-Party Computation (SMPC) sharing, and an optional World ID verification de-verification feature that allows users to delete iris codes.

These measures have been recognized by the Spanish Agency for Data Protection (AEPD), which has been closely monitoring the project’s compliance with data protection regulations.

Survey results and community support

Survey results indicate strong community support for Worldcoin’s return to Spain. According to Thomas Scott, chief legal officer at Tools for Humanity, surveys show that World ID technology is considered essential for distinguishing between bots and humans online. “Our commitment demonstrates how committed Tools for Humanity and all Worldcoin project contributors are to explaining their projects to AEPD and providing BayLDA with the opportunity to thoroughly review the project and technology,” he said.

TFH’s decision to extend its suspension of operations highlights its commitment to transparency and compliance, with the goal of building trust with both regulators and the public.
