Traditionally considered an odd couple, Bitcoin has made some interesting forays into the cryptocurrency ecosystem over the past year. Cake Wallet’s decision to integrate Lightning is an unexpected and exciting development that continues this trend of Bitcoin integration. Through this, Cake aims to make Bitcoin more practical for users’ everyday use.

In a post published yesterday, Breez CEO Roy Sheinfield highlights the “tremendous opportunity” this creates.

“Introducing Lightning to the wider cryptocurrency world will allow more users to interface with Bitcoin, and Lightning is the technology that allows currencies to be put into “cryptocurrencies.” Combining cryptocurrency with Lightning is an inevitable step toward mainstreaming Bitcoin.”

This collaboration will allow Breez’s open source SDK, which includes Blockstream’s Greenlight node service, to be built into Cake Wallet, significantly enhancing its functionality. Breez’s SDK is designed to make it simple to integrate Lightning into any app, enabling faster and cheaper Bitcoin transactions.

Vik Sharma, CEO of Cake Wallet, shared his thoughts on this integration: “We are excited to work with Breez to bring Lightning payments to our users. This upgrade means faster and cheaper Bitcoin transactions without compromising privacy and security.”

“Bitcoin is the native currency of the internet, and our goal at Breez is to make Bitcoin as accessible and easy to use as possible,” said Roy Sheinfeld, co-founder and CEO of Breez. “Our partnership with Cake Wallet is a big step in that direction. “Provides Lightning payments to hundreds of thousands of users.”

Lightning integration through the Breez SDK is consistent with Breez’s mission to make Bitcoin more accessible and practical for everyday transactions. Breez’s technology provides a non-custodial solution that not only provides seamless integration, but also emphasizes privacy and security by ensuring users maintain control of their funds.

Breez’s SDK supports a variety of functions, including payment sending and receiving, swap, and BOLT 11 payments, as well as an open LSP model that allows apps to select and change LSP (Lightning Service Provider) as needed. This flexibility ensures that SDK integration does not lock users into a single service provider and promotes an open and adaptable ecosystem.

Cake Wallet has been gaining popularity recently with the introduction of automatic payments, another new and impressive privacy feature for Bitcoin users.

For those interested in trying it out, the public launch of the Lightning-enabled Cake Wallet is expected in July 2024. This new feature promises to make Bitcoin transactions smoother and more efficient for regular users.
