The concept of AI agents has become a key topic in the field of artificial intelligence, especially in the development of large-scale language models (LLMs). According to the LangChain blog, definitions and understandings of what constitutes an ‘agent’ can vary widely, often leading to confusion and debate among developers and researchers.

AI agent definition

The LangChain blog describes an agent as a system that uses LLM to determine the control flow of an application. Although this definition is descriptive, it may not fit with the common perception of agents as advanced, autonomous entities. In this blog, LLM emphasizes that even simple systems that route between multiple paths can be considered agents under this definition.

Andrew Ng, a prominent figure in the field of AI, suggests that instead of debating which systems qualify as true agents, it is more productive to view agent capabilities on a spectrum. This view is consistent with how self-driving cars are classified according to their level of autonomy.

Spectrum of agent behavior

The LangChain blog goes into more detail about the concept of ‘agent’ behavior, suggesting it as a measure of how much the LLM determines the behavior of a system. The blog breaks down the system into different levels of agent behavior.

  • router: A system that uses LLM to route input to specific workflows.
  • State machine: It is a system that includes multiple routing steps and can be repeated until the task is complete.
  • Autonomous agent: Similar to the implementation seen in the Voyager paper, it is a highly agentic system that builds and remembers tools for future steps.

This technical step will help developers design and describe LLM systems more effectively.

Importance of Agent System

Understanding the level of agentic behavior in a system can have a significant impact on the development process. More agentic systems require robust orchestration frameworks, durable execution environments, and comprehensive evaluation and monitoring tools. The LangChain blog emphasizes that as systems become more agentic, they become more complex and difficult to manage, requiring specialized tools and infrastructure.

For example, highly agentic systems benefit from frameworks that support branching logic and cycles, enabling faster development. Monitoring tools are also needed that allow developers to observe and modify agents’ status or instructions in real time to ensure the system is functioning properly.

New tools for agent systems

As the complexity and capabilities of agent systems increase, the need for new tools and infrastructure grows. LangChain developed LangGraph for agent orchestration and LangSmith for testing and observing LLM applications. These tools are designed to support the unique requirements of highly agentic systems.

As the field of AI continues to advance, understanding and leveraging the spectrum of agent capabilities will be critical to developing efficient and robust LLM applications.
