According to the NVIDIA blog, Toronto-based startup Wabi is making significant progress in autonomous vehicles (AVs) by leveraging the power of generative AI to deliver a fully driverless solution, targeting the long-haul trucking industry in particular.

Innovative AI solutions for autonomous trucks

At the forefront of this innovation is Waabi’s use of the NVIDIA DRIVE Thor central vehicle computer, which was unveiled at GTC in March. The partnership aims to bring to market a safe, generative AI-based autonomous truck solution known as the Waabi Driver. The Waabi Driver is designed to be a cost-effective, scalable solution that can safely handle a variety of road conditions.

Waabi’s development is based on NVIDIA DRIVE OS, an operating system tailored for AI-defined autonomous vehicles. The startup’s approach integrates two generative AI systems: Waabi World, an advanced simulator that acts as a “teacher,” and Waabi Driver, an end-to-end AI system that acts as a “student.” This combination reduces the need for extensive road testing, facilitating safer and more efficient autonomous driving solutions.

Waabi founder and CEO Raquel Urtasun expressed her enthusiasm for the collaboration with NVIDIA, highlighting the potential of generative AI to accelerate AV development by enabling the creation of foundational models that can operate autonomously.

Strategic Partnerships and Expansion

Waabi’s progress is marked by several key milestones. The company recently completed a $200 million Series B funding round with participation from NVIDIA. Waabi also launched its first commercial autonomous truck route in the United States in partnership with logistics giant Uber Freight. To support these operations, Waabi has established a truck terminal near Dallas, Texas, which will serve as a hub for its activities in the region.

Urtasun says on its company website that combining generative AI-based simulations with underlying AI models designed for real-world behavior will enable faster, safer, and more scalable deployment of AV technologies globally.

Listeners interested in getting more insight into Waabi’s use of generative AI in autonomous vehicle development can listen to Urtasun’s GTC talk here.
