Filecoin (FIL) is set to release its latest network upgrade, NV23 (codenamed ‘Waffle’), on August 6, 2024. According to Filecoin, the upgrade aims to improve network performance and expand integration with the broader blockchain ecosystem.
Key Features of NV23
The NV23 upgrade introduces several important Filecoin Improvement Proposals (FIPs).
- Fast Finality (F3) Soft Launch – FIP-00086: This proposal enables passive F3 testing on mainnet, laying the groundwork for rapid completion in future upgrades and potentially a full launch on NV24.
- Support for Legacy Ethereum Transactions – FIP-0091: Adds support for Homestead and EIP-155 Ethereum transactions, improving compatibility with Ethereum tools and wallets, facilitating onboarding of Ethereum users, and improving interoperability with the Ethereum ecosystem.
- Non-Interactive Proof of Replica (NI-PoRep) – FIP-0092: Separating the sealing and storage operations introduces significant changes to the sector sealing process, allowing for independent execution. This allows for early sealing in areas with lower energy costs and gives storage providers control over scheduling sectors for window posting deadlines.
Impact on the Filecoin Network
The NV23 upgrade is expected to bring several benefits to the Filecoin network.
- Improved performance: NI-PoRep enables you to add storage more easily and cost-effectively, potentially accelerating network growth.
- Broader ecosystem integration: Support for existing Ethereum transactions opens up new cross-chain application possibilities.
- A faster, more efficient network: The soft launch of F3 marks the first step towards significantly reducing transaction confirmation times.
As the NV23 launch date approaches, the Filecoin community can expect better features, efficiency, and greater integration with the broader blockchain ecosystem.
