The Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV), the most populous state in the U.S., is building its extensive and complex vehicle registration system on the blockchain.
According to a new announcement from Ava Labs, the developer behind Avalanche (AVAX), the state of California is using the chain to update its title transfer system.
“What else can Avalanche L1 do?
The California DMV is launching its own chain, Avalanche, to modernize the vehicle ownership transfer experience for California’s 39 million+ residents.”
Ava Labs said in an accompanying post that the new system will allow title transfers to be completed in minutes rather than weeks.
“Trusted transfer is one of the key challenges for the success of any e-titling solution. Bringing these titles to Avalanche L1 provides complete transparency, security and allows vehicle owners to digitally track and manage their pink slip titles.”
Reuters reports that the move puts 42 million car titles on the Avalanche blockchain, a collaboration between the state of California and Oxhead Alpha that allows drivers to access digital car titles via an app, making it the first partnership in the U.S.
According to Ava Labs President John Wu, the title has already been added to the blockchain. As for the app, California says it could be launched as early as next year.
