Storacha aims to revolutionize the decentralized storage landscape by transforming web3.storage into a community-driven, decentralized hot storage network. According to Filecoin (FIL), Storacha will leverage the best features of web3.storage and Saturn to create a blazing-fast, user-owned, verifiable hot data storage and retrieval system built on top of Filecoin.
Storacha addresses the limitations of centralized storage providers like AWS, which often lock users into their ecosystems, charge high fees, and control access. While decentralized storage solutions exist, many are niche, focus on archival storage, or struggle to meet the demands of scalable, searchable data. Storacha aims to bridge this gap by providing a production-ready platform for storing and retrieving verifiable data at scale.
Distributed hot object storage
Storacha’s distributed hot object storage and retrieval system is designed for large-scale data on the open web. It leverages blockchain to maintain decentralization and resiliency while storing data in a trustless manner with participating nodes. The system guarantees fast, user-owned, verifiable, and permissioned data storage and retrieval, and is optimized for highly searchable storage and production-level workloads.
The main features of Storacha are:
- User Controlled Authorization Network (UCAN): A cryptographic keypair-based token that provides user-owned storage with flexible and powerful authorization features.
- Battle-tested production system: A proven system capable of storing petabytes of data with efficient search performance.
- IPFS Compatibility/Migration: Supports content addressability and reliable storage with seamless integration and migration to IPFS.
- Filecoin Integration: Leverages Filecoin for redundancy and long-term storage with a verifiable aggregation pipeline featuring PoDSI proofs.
Filecoin Supercharging
Storacha enhances Filecoin by enabling Filecoin storage providers (SPs) to operate as Storacha hot storage nodes. This integration incentivizes the storage of unsealed data and rewards fast and efficient retrieval. The result is a robust, high-performance data storage and retrieval ecosystem where data is securely stored and easily accessible via IPFS.
Storacha Team and Vision
The Storacha team, backed by Protocol Labs, has extensive experience building web3.storage and Saturn. Their mission is to redefine decentralized storage by providing an intuitive, high-performance solution that matches the robustness of existing systems. Storacha aims to eliminate dependency on centralized storage and CDN networks, and give full autonomy to the open web by ensuring user-owned data.
Future Development
Storacha plans to open up the network to permissionless participation by early 2025. Interested users can visit the Storacha teaser site, join the Discord community, and follow us on X for real-time updates.
