The Hong Kong Monetary Authority has warned the public about fraudulent websites and phishing messages linked to HSBC, urging caution and providing guidance on protective measures.

The Hong Kong Monetary Authority (HKMA) has issued a public warning about fraudulent websites and phishing instant messages related to The Hongkong and Shanghai Banking Corporation Limited (HSBC). According to the HKMA, this fraudulent activity has been reported and the public has been given immediate warning.

Details of fraudulent activity

HKMA emphasizes that HSBC will never send SMS or emails with embedded hyperlinks that direct customers to websites for transactions. The bank also will not request sensitive personal information such as login passwords or one-time passwords (OTPs) via phone, email or SMS, including messages with embedded links.

Public advice and safety measures

The public is advised to remain vigilant and not to provide personal information or make financial transactions through suspicious websites or emails. Anyone who has already shared information or engaged in transactions through these fraudulent channels is urged to contact their bank immediately using the contact details provided in the official press release. Individuals are also urged to report incidents to the Hong Kong Police Force Crime Commission Information Centre on 2860 5012.

Related incidents and warnings

This warning follows a series of similar warnings issued by financial authorities around the world as cybercriminals increasingly target banking customers with sophisticated phishing scams. Several banks have reported a surge in phishing attempts in recent months, highlighting the need to increase cybersecurity awareness among consumers.

For further details, please refer to the full HKMA press release on the HKMA website.
