Global corporation Sony GroupStartale, a joint blockchain investment firm, announced the development of Soneium, the first Ethereum layer-2 blockchain aimed at mass adoption with a focus on scalability and user-friendliness.
Sony Block Solutions Labs said in a statement that Soneium plans to offer Web3 apps across a range of verticals including entertainment, gaming and finance after launch, leveraging Sony’s global Web2 presence.
“The Sony Group has strong distribution channels across a wide range of industries and users who already exist in our daily lives,” said founder Sota Watanabe. Asta Network And Sony Block Solution Labs director said in a press release: “With Soneium, we’re going to build what people want and take it beyond Web3 and into the mainstream.”
The joint venture is currently preparing to launch the blockchain’s testnet, but no launch date has been announced yet. Sony Block Solutions Labs said Soneium will release technical details about the platform’s tools and developer requirements in the coming weeks.
For the testnet launch, Astar Network will integrate its zkEVM with Soneium to integrate assets and underlying infrastructure to increase initial liquidity of the new chain.
Sony Block Solutions Labs mentioned that future use cases for Soneium include protecting the rights of creators to their content and creating new mechanisms for fair distribution of profits between creators and fans.
