The Hong Kong Monetary Authority (HKMA) has issued a warning about fraudulent websites and phishing messages involving Industrial and Commercial Bank of China (Asia) Limited.

The Hong Kong Monetary Authority (HKMA) has issued a public warning about fraudulent websites and phishing instant messages impersonating Industrial and Commercial Bank of China (Asia) Limited (ICBC Asia). According to the HKMA official website, the warning was issued on 23 August 2024.

Details of fraudulent activity

According to the HKMA, these fraudulent schemes involve websites and instant messages that mislead individuals into providing sensitive personal information. The HKMA reiterated that legitimate banks, including ICBC Asia, will not send SMS or emails containing embedded hyperlinks that direct recipients to the bank’s website to complete transactions. They will also not request sensitive information such as login passwords or one-time passwords (OTPs) via phone calls, emails or SMS.

Public advice

HKMA advises anyone who has provided personal information or conducted financial transactions through these fraudulent websites or messages to immediately contact ICBC Asia using the contact details provided in the press release. Such individuals should also report the incident to the Hong Kong Police Force Crime Information Centre at 2860 5012.

Continuous efforts

This warning from the HKMA is part of a wider effort to combat cyber fraud and protect consumers. The HKMA continues to monitor and address fraud schemes targeting banking customers, and works closely with law enforcement and financial institutions to mitigate risks and enhance public awareness.

For further updates and information on how to avoid falling victim to these scams, the public is encouraged to visit the HKMA website for the latest advisories and information on security measures.
