- The Open Network (TON) is back in the dark.
- Efforts are underway to find a solution.
- The network’s resurgence has raised questions.
Telegram-affiliated blockchain TON has been under a lot of pressure this week, starting with the arrest of Telegram founder Pavel Durov and the subsequent decline in the native token following the suspension of activity on the chain. On August 27, 2024, TON suffered a massive outage, halting block production for several hours.
Although the initial outage was successfully resolved and operations resumed, the problems were not over as a second, larger outage occurred.
TON is off the radar again
Just hours after recovering from a nearly seven-hour outage, The Open Network (TON) is once again in the spotlight for the wrong reasons. In a tweet on August 28, the network revealed that it was once again facing a block production outage, marking the second major outage in less than 36 hours.
TON said the second outage began at approximately 7:19 PM UTC, and was again due to a mass issuance of DOGS mimecoins.
In response, the network side urged mainnet validators to update and stabilize their nodes to ensure proper functioning of the network, and insisted on continued efforts to resolve the issue and ensure the safety of user assets.
The latest issue has since been patched, but the severity of the outage has raised concerns within the community.
TON’s ongoing issues have generated a variety of reactions across the community. The broader reaction has been frustration and concern about the network’s vulnerability to outages, especially given the industry’s position and rapid growth.
Echoing these sentiments, X user joshuayog1 emphasized that while there is still strong support for TON, the repeated outages are testing users’ patience and confidence.
Another user claims that it is the fastest blockchain with significant capacity, seemingly ““It’s just words.”
However, many in the community have expressed support for the criminal chain and called for sustainable solutions to prevent future recurrence.
On the other side
- TON’s native coin, Toncoin, has remained stable despite the second service outage and is trading at $5.61 at the time of writing.
- Arrested Telegram founder Pavel Durov was recently granted bail.
- The DOGS Memecoin craze has died down a bit, with the token down about 29% from its all-time high.
Why this matters
This is the second outage of The Open Network (TON) in such a short period of time, raising significant concerns about the future viability of the network. The frequent outages raise doubts about its ability to handle expansion pressures, especially as it experiences rapid growth and increased activity.
