According to the NVIDIA blog, NVIDIA’s AI and accelerated computing platforms are leading to significant energy efficiency improvements across a range of industries, which was highlighted during Climate Week 2024.
NVIDIA’s global operations will all be powered by renewable energy sources by the end of January. This change is consistent with the company’s mission to help customers and partners leverage AI and accelerated computing for sustainable growth.
Foxconn Saves Energy with Digital Twins
Foxconn, the world’s largest electronics manufacturer, is using NVIDIA’s accelerated computing and AI to build a digital twin of its new factory in Mexico. The initiative is expected to reduce annual energy costs by 30 percent. “Our digital twin will drive new levels of automation and industrial efficiency, saving time, money, and energy,” said Young Liu, Foxconn’s chairman.
The project uses software from the Siemens Xcelerator portfolio, including Teamcenter and NVIDIA Omniverse. Siemens and NVIDIA executives will discuss sustainability efforts at Climate Week. hour magazine.
Cloud services increase efficiency
Cloud computing services are also becoming more energy efficient. An e-commerce website using NVIDIA AI saw significant reductions in latency and nearly 12x energy efficiency after migrating from CPUs to GPUs. Similarly, a popular video conferencing application saw a 25x energy efficiency improvement after migrating from CPUs to GPUs.
Service providers like Equinix are transitioning to renewable energy sources with the goal of becoming climate neutral by 2030. Equinix currently uses 96% renewable energy to power sustainable personal AI with NVIDIA DGX systems.
Detoxify Cancer While Saving Energy
The Wellcome Sanger Institute, a leading genome sequencing facility, uses NVIDIA Parabricks software on NVIDIA DGX systems to sequence and analyze tens of thousands of cancer samples. This setup reduces run times by 1.6x and energy consumption by up to 42x, saving $1 million and 1,000 megawatt-hours per year.
Expanding the Sustainability Ecosystem
NVIDIA is fostering a broad ecosystem focused on sustainability. Through our collaboration with the United Nations, more than 14,000 data scientists have been trained to design AI models for early flood detection. The NVIDIA Inception program currently includes more than 1,000 startups working on energy efficiency innovations.
Savings span industries across the world
“The generative AI revolution is poised to impact every industry and usher in a new era of productivity and sustainability,” NVIDIA founder and CEO Jensen Huang said in the company’s latest sustainability report. Independent analysts recognize that AI has a significant impact on reducing global energy consumption.
45,000x efficiency improvement in AI inference
NVIDIA’s platform has become 45,000x more energy efficient at processing large language models over the past eight years. With speedups ranging from 20x to 160x over CPUs across a wide range of workloads, accelerated computing has become synonymous with sustainable computing.
Climate Week Schedule Expanded
NVIDIA and its partners are participating in several Climate Week events, including the Climate AI Summit with Salesforce and the Climate Science Fair, which showcases startups using NVIDIA technology. These events aim to demonstrate how AI and accelerated computing can help combat climate change.
“Accelerated computing is a way to meet the massive demand for computing power in a sustainable and cost-effective way,” Huang said.
