Digital asset industry leader Tether announced that it has partnered with the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) to seize more than $6 million in assets linked to a Southeast Asia-based cryptocurrency trust scheme, according to Tether.io. These efforts highlight Tether’s ongoing commitment to working closely with law enforcement to combat fraud and protect the cryptocurrency ecosystem.
DOJ’s Swift Action
The DOJ announced that it had seized funds from a scheme that defrauded individuals by mimicking legitimate platforms. Tether’s intervention included an asset freeze that facilitated a rapid recovery process by the DOJ. The U.S. Attorney’s Office in Washington, D.C., has publicly acknowledged Tether’s significant role in transferring seized assets.
Previous Collaboration
Over the past 12 months, Tether has played a key role in several law enforcement actions. This includes helping seize approximately $9 million in USD₮ from a cyber fraud ring, approximately $5 million in USD₮ from disrupting a pig slaughter operation, and seizing $1.4 million worth of USD₮ tokens from a tech support fraud network. Tether’s proactive stance in support of law enforcement reflects its commitment to transparency and accountability within the cryptocurrency industry. To date, the company has supported more than 180 enforcement agencies across 45 jurisdictions, intercepted more than $1.8 billion USD₮, redistributed more than $128 million USD₮ to rightful owners and authorities, and secured more than 1,850 USD₮ related to illegal activities.
