SETI Institute researchers have pioneered the use of AI in real-time detection of high-speed radio bursts, leveraging NVIDIA’s accelerated computing platform to improve analysis of astronomical data.

In a groundbreaking initiative, researchers at the SETI Institute have leveraged NVIDIA’s advanced computing platform to pioneer the application of artificial intelligence (AI) for real-time detection of fast radio bursts (FRBs). According to the NVIDIA blog, this represents a significant leap forward in the field of radio astronomy, allowing scientists to analyze streaming astronomy data with unprecedented precision.

Advancing astronomical discoveries with AI

The SETI Institute, which operates the Allen Telescope Array in northern California, is a leader in finding extraterrestrial intelligence and studying rare space events like FRBs. The roots of the initiative go back more than a decade, when the institute’s SETI Chair, Andrew Siemion, recognized the potential of machine learning to analyze radio signals from space. SETI researchers have partnered with NVIDIA to enhance their capabilities by harnessing the power of AI and accelerated computing.

Collaborative Efforts and Technological Advances

A collaboration between SETI and NVIDIA during the pandemic led to the development of pilot applications using the NVIDIA Holoscan and IGX platforms. The application enables real-time data processing from the telescope, allowing researchers to perform AI inferences directly on the incoming data. This innovation will transform the way telescopes are utilized by incorporating AI software for dynamic data analysis.

Successful clinical trials and future prospects

In a recent test, the SETI team, in collaboration with the Breakthrough Listen program, successfully connected a real-time data pipeline to 28 antennas targeting the Crab Nebula. We processed over 90 billion data packets in 15 hours, achieving data processing speeds that are twice as fast as previous work. These successes highlight the transformative potential of AI in radio astronomy.

Expanding the AI Frontier

In the future, the SETI Institute plans to expand this pilot software across its network of radio telescopes and share this functionality with astronomers around the world. The goal is to leverage AI in collaboration with international observatories to significantly improve signal detection from space. This initiative also opens the door to potential interdisciplinary applications, including repurposing AI algorithms for a variety of scientific investigations.

These developments highlight the SETI Institute’s commitment to pushing the boundaries of astronomy research through innovation and collaboration and establishing AI as a critical tool in the quest to understand the universe.
