The 2024 US election has highlighted cryptocurrencies as a critical political issue, with both Republican and Democratic policymakers increasingly speaking out about their potential benefits. According to a16z crypto’s report, this shift is especially noticeable in key swing states like Pennsylvania and Wisconsin, where cryptocurrency-related searches have increased significantly.
Growing interest in swing states
Pennsylvania and Wisconsin, expected to be the most competitive states, saw the fourth and fifth largest surges in cryptocurrency interest since the 2020 election, according to Google Trends. Other states, such as Michigan, also saw significant growth, while Arizona and Nevada reported declines in interest.
Impact of cryptocurrency exchange trading products
The growing interest in cryptocurrencies can be partially attributed to the introduction of Bitcoin and Ethereum exchange-traded products (ETPs). These products have expanded accessibility to investing in cryptocurrencies, which currently hold $65 billion in on-chain assets. Although they are called ETFs, these financial instruments are officially registered as ETPs under SEC regulations.
legislative development
The SEC’s approval of the ETP marks an important policy milestone for the cryptocurrency industry. With bipartisan support, the House of Representatives passed the Financial Innovation and Technology for the 21st Century (FIT21) Act, which aims to provide regulatory clarity to cryptocurrency entrepreneurs. A pending Senate decision could further solidify this progress.
national initiative
At the state level, Wyoming has made progress with the Decentralized Unincorporated Nonprofit Associations (DUNA) Act, which grants legal recognition to Decentralized Autonomous Organizations (DAOs) and allows blockchain networks to operate without sacrificing decentralization.
Global regulatory environment
Internationally, the European Union is actively working on the Markets in Cryptocurrencies Act (MiCA), the first comprehensive cryptocurrency regulatory framework that will come into effect by the end of the year. The EU’s approach contrasts with the United States, where regulatory discussions are ongoing, particularly with regard to stablecoins.
Stablecoins and U.S. economic strategy
Stablecoins, primarily denominated in USD, have become a focus of US policy discussions. These digital assets have strengthened the international position of the U.S. dollar and quickly elevated it to become a significant holder of U.S. debt, surpassing some major foreign countries.
As countries consider central bank digital currencies (CBDCs), the United States faces a strategic opportunity with stablecoins. As more and more politicians join the cryptocurrency debate, the environment is ripe for developing comprehensive cryptocurrency policies and strategies.
