The Cronos (CRO) mainnet is preparing for a significant upgrade called ‘Pallene’, which promises to introduce parallel transaction processing along with a number of enhancements. According to Cronos Labs, this upgrade will leverage the latest innovations in the Cosmos SDK and CometBFT.
Upgrade Details
The Pallene upgrade is scheduled to occur at block height 17,155,000, which is expected at 6:00 AM GMT (2:00 PM HKT/SGT) on Thursday, December 12, 2024. The timing of the upgrade will depend on block production progress, and stakeholders can monitor the estimated time through Cronos Explorer.
During the upgrade process, the Cronos network will experience approximately 60 minutes of downtime. This pause affects all Cronos services, including the mainnet network, public RPC, Explorer, and Cronos Bridge, which will be temporarily suspended and resumed after the upgrade is complete.
Impact on End Users
End users can expect the chain to be upgraded at the exact block height of 17,155,000. Once the upgrade block height is reached, the node operator must update the node binary to stay in sync with the chain. The network will pause briefly until most validators have completed the upgrade, ensuring all data remains intact.
Guidance for Node Operators
Node operators should be prepared to upgrade to the latest ‘cronosd’ binary version 1.4.0 once the target block height is achieved. It is important not to upgrade to this version before the specified block height is reached. Doing so may result in incompatibility. Detailed upgrade instructions are provided in the official upgrade guide.
For further inquiries or support regarding the upgrade, interested parties are encouraged to connect with the Cronos team via the #cronos-mainnet channel on the Cronos Discord server.
This upgrade is part of Cronos Labs’ ongoing efforts to improve network performance and scalability and lay the foundation for future development within the blockchain ecosystem.
