The Hong Kong Monetary Authority is warning the public about fraudulent websites imitating Bank of Communications (Hong Kong) Limited and urging them to exercise caution and immediately report any suspicious activity.

The Hong Kong Monetary Authority (HKMA) has issued a warning to the public about fraudulent websites impersonating Bank of Communications (Hong Kong) Limited. This warning, issued on 13 January 2025, is intended to inform consumers about the potential risks associated with these scams, as reported by the HKMA.

Scam Details

HKMA has received reports of fake websites attempting to deceive users by impersonating themselves as the legitimate Bank of Communications (Hong Kong) Limited. Scam sites are designed to extract sensitive personal information from unsuspecting individuals. In response, the HKMA has provided a link on its website to an official press release detailing the issue. For more information, please visit the HKMA website.

Important notice from HKMA

Authorities emphasize that banks generally do not send SMS or emails containing hyperlinks directing customers to conduct online transactions. Additionally, banks never request sensitive personal information, such as login credentials or one-time passwords, through these communication channels. HKMA strongly advises against providing personal information or conducting financial transactions through suspicious websites.

Recommended Action

If you have unintentionally shared personal information or made a financial transaction through a fraudulent site, please contact the Bank of Korea using the contact information provided in the official press release. Affected parties should also report the incident to the Hong Kong Police Force by contacting the Crime Branch Information Center on 2860 5012.

This incident highlights the importance of consumer vigilance and cybersecurity awareness, especially in the face of increasingly sophisticated online fraud. The HKMA continues to closely monitor the situation and remains committed to protecting the financial safety of the public.
