The open source ecosystem has undergone significant change over the past seven years, with recent survey data highlighting key trends in security, AI adoption, and diversity. According to the GitHub blog, the latest survey involved 8,400 contributors and provided a comprehensive look at the current state and future direction of open source.
Security takes center stage
Security has emerged as an important area of focus within the open source community. The 2024 survey introduces questions on the “Security by Design” principle to assess how developers prioritize security in open source projects. An overwhelming 82% of respondents indicated the importance of security practices when adopting open source software, and 62% prioritized security when deciding where to contribute.
AI tools gain popularity
The use of AI tools is growing in the open source community, with 72% of survey participants reporting using AI tools such as GitHub Copilot for coding and documentation purposes. These trends highlight the growing reliance on AI to improve productivity and innovation in software development.
embracing diversity
Diversity within the open source community has seen a positive increase with a broader range of perspectives and backgrounds enriching the ecosystem. The percentage of respondents identifying as an ethnic minority increased from 13% in 2017 to 18% in 2024, and the percentage of respondents identifying as an immigrant increased from 27% to 31%. This diversification reflects a more inclusive community, fostering diverse contributions and ideas.
The survey also highlights other important trends, including community attitudes toward privacy, harassment, funding and overall community health. These insights provide valuable guidance for stakeholders seeking to support and invest in the future of open source.
Joint efforts for a safe future
To address ongoing security concerns, GitHub invested $1.25 million through its Secure Open Source Fund to help administrators strengthen their security measures. The organization calls on other institutions, including governments and funders, to collaborate and invest in open source initiatives.
With more than 75 million new GitHub users since our last survey, the open source community is stronger and more diverse than ever. These advances point to a promising trajectory for open source, featuring improved security, innovative AI applications, and a commitment to diversity.
