In remarks explicitly labeled as a “crypto project,” Atkins outlined efforts toward a clearer framework for applying federal securities laws to cryptocurrency assets/transactions. Why it matters: This is a descriptive baseline for how SEC leadership justifies short-term personnel movements (market structure, custody, tokenization).

Announcement by CFTC Acting Chairman Pham “The first listed spot cryptocurrency transaction” On a futures exchange registered with the CFTC Digital Asset Pilot Program Allow certain digital assets (including explicitly) BTC, ETH, USDC) is used as collateral in the derivatives market with tokenized collateral instructions. Why it matters:The CFTC explicitly positions itself as a “safe onshore alternative” for both in-kind and ancillary innovations.

CFTC withdraws “outdated” digital asset guidance on “physical delivery.”
The CFTC announced that it was withdrawing its prior guidance on ‘physical delivery’ of cryptocurrencies, citing significant market developments. Why it matters: We propose a reset with new FAQs/Guidelines to reduce confusion in legacy interpretation and align with current market plumbing.

Michael Selig takes office as CFTC Chairman.
The CFTC announced that Selig took office following Senate confirmation (December 18). Why it matters: A change in leadership could alter the agency’s leverage in enforcement posture, pilot programs, and market structure negotiations with Congress/SEC.

Despite the wrong kind of snow in FCA (IFYYK), there has been tremendous progress overall in the UK. By 2026, we hope to see a single rulebook for the US and UK when it comes to cryptocurrencies, but much more work is needed.
The UK Government (HMT) is pushing for “new cryptocurrency rules” and has officially developed the FSMA cryptocurrency regulations.
HMT has announced a new regime that will bring crypto-asset companies to FCA-style regulation (the government’s message is that this is pro-growth + consumer protection). that Financial Services and Markets Act 2000 (Crypto Assets) Regulations 2025 It was submitted to Congress the same week. Why it matters: This is the clearest “expanding UK borders” step in the Starmer-era economic agenda. Companies must prepare for approval style expectations (disclosure, market integrity, etc.).

FCA launches consultation on major cryptocurrency regimes (trading platforms, intermediaries, market abuse, authorization/disclosure).
The FCA press release outlines the package covering: Authorization/Disclosure, Market Abuse, Trading Platforms and Intermediaries—Explicitly in line with new government legislation. Why it matters: The UK is now going into the details of how exchanges/venues and brokers will behave. This will shape listing standards, monitoring expectations and rules of conduct.

The FCA makes “stablecoin payments” a priority for 2026. Sandbox support was emphasized.
The FCA said it would open a regulatory sandbox for companies to experiment with stablecoin issuance and position UK-issued stablecoins as a lever for modernizing payments. Why it matters: Stablecoins are treated as payment infrastructure (not just transaction chips), raising the profile of reserve formation, repayment, operational resilience and consumer protection.

The Bank of England discusses a regime for sterling-denominated stablecoins (including reserve composition parameters).
The BoE has launched a consultation paper on systematic stablecoin regulation, including proposed reserve asset structures and associated safeguards. Why it matters: The BoE is drawing a line between “systemic settlement stablecoins” (BoE-level oversight), which are important for issuers, wallets and payment integrators, and the wider FCA cryptocurrency perimeter.
