The Fédération Internationale de Football Association (FIFA), the body that governs international soccer competitions, is teaming up with blockchain company Modex to launch its own collection of non-fungible tokens (NFTs) ahead of the 2023 Club World Cup in Saudi Arabia.
According to an announcement on December 11, the first collection of 100 NFTs will debut on December 15, offering a chance to win tickets to the FIFA World Cup 2026 finals. Additionally, a total of 900 other digital collectibles consisting of memorable moments and digital versions of memorabilia from the ongoing tournament will be published this month on the Polygon Network and OpenSea.
“The FIFA Club World Cup, scheduled to kick off on December 12 in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, will bring together seven of the world’s best football teams. Champions from all six FIFA continents will participate,” FIFA wrote. NFTs are available on FIFA+ Collect, FIFA’s namesake platform. The NFT platform was launched in September 2022 and is based on Algorand.
“Digital collectibles increase the ways fans can interact with their favorite players, teams and their favorite games,” said Francesco Abbate, CEO of Modex. “We are honored to support FIFA in realizing this goal.”
The FIFA+ Collect platform has facilitated 11 NFT drops since its inception, with 909,255 digital collectibles minted and 16,448 holders. The platform recorded a total trading volume of $2.4 million in primary and secondary NFT markets. However, FIFA+ Collect Info claims that “Mint Volume may be misleading as FIFA+ Collect Info cannot distinguish between packs obtained for free in challenges and packs purchased with USDC.”
