In a groundbreaking initiative, Lugano, Switzerland has embraced the forefront of financial technology by integrating Bitcoin (BTC) and Tether (USDT) into its tax payment system. Starting today, residents and businesses in Lugano can use these two cryptocurrencies to settle various municipal bills, including taxes related to property tax and income tax.

This pioneering decision marks Lugano as one of the first global cities to integrate cryptocurrencies such as Bitcoin and Tether for payment of all municipal fees and services. The city’s leap into the world of cryptocurrency is evidence of efforts to integrate this innovative technology into everyday financial transactions.

Lugano and Tether’s Broad “Plan B” Strategy

Implementing this cryptocurrency-based tax payment option is a key component of Lugano and Tether’s broader “Plan B” strategy. This ambitious plan aims to revolutionize the city’s financial infrastructure using blockchain technology with Bitcoin as the foundation layer. The goal is to make cryptocurrencies a common tool for everyday transactions, such as paying taxes.

Working closely with Bitcoin Suisse, a leading Swiss company specializing in cryptocurrency financial services, Lugano has successfully developed a user-friendly solution for cryptocurrency trading. Bitcoin Suisse has modified its existing QR-Bill system to ensure seamless transactions using Bitcoin and Tether. This improvement allows taxpayers to easily make payments by scanning a QR code and confirming the payment through a mobile wallet application.

Armin Schmid, Chief Product Officer at Bitcoin Suisse, expressed enthusiasm for supporting Lugano’s journey to leverage Bitcoin technology to transform financial infrastructure.

Lugano’s initiative is part of a growing trend in Switzerland, where several municipalities are increasingly adopting cryptocurrencies. Swiss cities and regions, such as Zug, Zermatt and the canton of Zug, have already implemented similar systems, allowing cryptocurrency payments for taxes and government services.

By offering a convenient and modern way to pay taxes using digital currency, Lugano is not only mainstreaming cryptocurrency use, but is also setting a model for other cities around the world. This move marks a significant milestone for blockchain adoption in Switzerland and could potentially set a precedent for other cities around the world.
