Los Angeles-based video game developer Space Nation announced the roadmap for its upcoming flagship game Space Nation Online on Wednesday, revealing that the massively multiplayer online game will leverage generative AI to provide players with personalized experiences. .
Founded in 2019 by gaming industry veterans Jerome Wu and Tony Tang, Space Nation is backed by “Stargate,” “2012” and “Independence Day” filmmaker Roland Emmerich and media entrepreneur Marco Weber.
“The newly revealed AI integration is more than just a technological advancement,” Wu said in a statement. “It redefines how personal narratives unfold in the world of MMORPGs.” Wu serves as co-founder and CEO of Space Nation.
Wu said that using AI, Space Nation can create customized stories for individual gamers that adapt as they progress through the game. He said this would be impossible in an MMO with a “writing team made up of all humans.”
Space Nation did not elaborate further on the AI models it is using, but the company said its large-scale language models use “ethically sourced training data.”
Despite urging interest in the use of AI, Space Nation said major plot elements would be created by a dedicated team of human writers.
In addition to personalized AI experiences, the developers said Space Nation Online will include a crew system mechanic that will allow players to manage a team of characters with unique skills, traits, and roles.
“Over time, these crews will grow and develop as they are shaped by their experiences in the field,” the team said. “This dynamic allows players to not only manage their team but also actively develop their individual stories and skills through a variety of missions, creating a truly engaging and personalized gaming journey.”
Space Nation is adding a Web3 element, saying each crew member that players pick up during the game will be linked to a digital asset, or NFT, that the player owns. Community members can expect other benefits, including airdrops, the company added.
“The sophisticated Web3-based token economy and AI component of the game deliver an experience like no other,” Space Nation said. “It may be the closest entertainment product to the pioneering ideas of Ernest Cline and Ray Kurzweil.”
Space Nation Online will begin testing its AI integration on Discord this month in preparation for a beta launch in March. Space Nation’s official release is scheduled for fall 2024.
