Faced with a difficult diagnosis, Della Larsen turned to technology to ensure her voice continues to resonate for future generations. After being diagnosed with ALS, a progressive neurodegenerative disease, in April 2023, Larson embarked on a mission to preserve her voice for the grandchildren she would never meet.
Embracing Technology for Heritage
To achieve this, Larsen utilized voice banking technology, a groundbreaking tool that allows individuals to record their own voices for later use. She recorded herself reading 30 children’s books, each linked to a personal audio recording with a QR code. With these innovations, her voice can be a comfort to families, especially future grandchildren.

Her efforts did not go unnoticed. The Institute for ALS Treatment Development recently recognized Larsen for her courage and dedication by awarding her the Mary Lou Krauseneck Courage & Love Award. At the awards ceremony, she communicated through a device powered by advanced voice AI technology supported by Bridging Voice and The Scott Morgan Foundation.
