Animoca Brands’ Web3 chess-based strategy game Anichess has achieved significant growth in the Web3 gaming category, reaching over 100,000 active players in just three months since its public alpha release.
Anichess, Animoca Brands’ groundbreaking Web3 game, has achieved a significant milestone of surpassing 100,000 monthly active players just three months after its public alpha launch. Developed in Hong Kong in partnership with Chess.com and renowned chess champion Magnus Carlsen, Anichess combines traditional chess with unique magical elements to enhance the gaming experience with blockchain technology.
Rapid growth and community involvement
Since launching in October 2024, Anichess has seen significant growth, driven by a successful funding round of $1.8 million led by Sfermion and Amber Group. The game’s unique approach to chess, incorporating magic spells and dynamic gameplay, has captivated a wide audience of gamers and chess enthusiasts alike. Players have participated in more than 500,000 matches, accumulated over 3 million minutes of gameplay, and the game’s Discord community has grown to 40,000 members actively contributing to the game’s development.
Education and ecosystem support
Dedicated to nurturing the Web3 gaming sector, Anichess partners with local developers and educational institutions in Hong Kong to run hackathons, workshops and networking events. These initiatives aim to bridge the gap between Web2 and Web3 games, foster talent, and expand the Web3 ecosystem. Anychess plans to further solidify its position in the region by participating in major events such as Consensus Hong Kong and Hong Kong Web3 Festival.
Global expansion plans
Anichess aims to expand its presence in the Asia Pacific region, especially in India, the Philippines and Vietnam, where chess is very popular. The game aims to work with local communities and education partners to reach these markets and explore the potential of Web3 technology in the region.
Brian Chan, President of Anichess and Vice President of Operations at Animoca Brands, expressed pride in the game’s achievement and emphasized its role in advancing Web3 games and its commitment to Hong Kong’s vibrant gaming ecosystem.
Anichess is free to play at www.anichess.com. Future developments include a play-and-earn model, tournament buy-in, and an in-game marketplace aimed at further enriching the gaming economy.
