AWS and NVIDIA are driving digital transformation in the energy sector by integrating AWS Energy HPC Orchestrator with NVIDIA Energy Samples to meet growing compute requirements.

The energy sector is undergoing significant digital transformation and increasing compute demands, especially for high-performance computing (HPC) workloads. According to the NVIDIA Technology Blog, these changes are achieved through advanced seismic imaging technologies such as Reverse Time Migration (RTM) and Full Waveform Inversion (FWI), which require significant computing resources. These methods can increase workloads exponentially, highlighting the need for scalable computing solutions.

Cloud Solutions for Energy HPC

Cloud computing is emerging as a viable solution to address these challenges and provide flexibility and scalability. However, optimizing cloud performance and costs requires modernizing existing HPC applications. Developed in partnership with AWS and leading energy companies, AWS Energy HPC Orchestrator provides an integrated environment to address these challenges. It focuses on interoperability between processing modules and provides cloud-based HPC templates to ease modernization of engineering operations.

AWS Energy HPC Orchestrator

AWS Energy HPC Orchestrator includes essential components such as orchestration of diverse HPC applications using a common storage system, enterprise features for user and data management, and a marketplace for deploying compatible HPC applications. It also defines data standards to ensure interoperability between applications.

NVIDIA Energy Sample Integration

The integration of NVIDIA Energy Samples with AWS Energy HPC Orchestrator demonstrates how cloud-native solutions can meet the computing needs of the energy industry. NVIDIA Energy Samples, including key algorithms such as RTM, are optimized for NVIDIA GPUs, allowing geophysicists to develop high-performance implementations. These samples are not production-grade, but provide a basis for customization and performance tuning.

Seismic processing optimization

AWS RTM templates, part of AWS Energy HPC Orchestrator, are designed to transform traditional seismic processing into modern, cloud-native applications. This design leverages AWS services to improve scalability and operational efficiency. The execution of the RTM algorithm is comprised of microservices, each handling a specific task, ensuring resilience and scalability.

meaning of the future

AWS and NVIDIA’s collaboration highlights the potential of cloud-native solutions to solve computing challenges in the energy industry. As digital transformation continues, the adoption of integrated cloud-based systems will become important for handling complex computing tasks. These synergies not only optimize performance but also provide cost-effective solutions, paving the way for the future advancement of HPC within the energy sector.
