Bitcoin fell 15% as U.S. Treasury yields rose and the Justice Department planned a large-scale Bitcoin liquidation, impacting market dynamics.

Bitcoin (BTC) has recently faced severe market turmoil, according to a report from Bitfinex Alpha. The cryptocurrency fell to a low of $91,430 last week, down more than 15% from its all-time high of $108,100 observed in December 2024. The sharp decline is due to heightened investor caution due to a surge in U.S. Treasury yields and continued capital outflows. Spot Bitcoin ETF.

Market Impact and Response

With U.S. Treasury yields reaching a 14-month high of 4.79%, institutional investors are moving away from riskier assets such as Bitcoin. This trend was further exacerbated by the U.S. Department of Justice’s announcement that it would liquidate $6.5 billion in Bitcoin seized for illegal activity, putting further pressure on the market.

Despite these challenges, Bitcoin has remained resilient, rallying 42% since the US election and outperforming stocks that lost their post-election gains. However, Bitcoin may see increased volatility in the near term as the Federal Reserve signals that it will cut fewer interest rates and tighten financial conditions further.

Economic context and cryptocurrency development

The U.S. economy ended 2024 with robust job growth and an expanding services sector. In December, 256,000 nonfarm jobs were added, exceeding expectations and reducing the unemployment rate to 4.1%. This strong labor market, along with wage growth, supports consumer spending, a key driver of economic stability.

In the realm of cryptocurrency regulation, the UK Treasury’s decision to exempt cryptocurrency staking from certain regulatory frameworks provides clarity and encourages innovation within the blockchain industry. At the same time, Hong Kong aims to balance innovation and risk management and set a precedent for global regulatory practice by introducing a supervisory incubator for distributed ledger technology.

Regulatory Issues and Market Sentiment

The announcement of the Justice Department’s plan to sell $6.5 billion worth of Bitcoin sparked concerns about increased market volatility, sending the price of Bitcoin down 7.2%. This regulatory move challenges the bullish sentiment that previously drove Bitcoin to all-time highs and highlights the impact policy decisions have on market dynamics.

Overall, Bitcoin faces short-term challenges, but President-elect Donald Trump’s potential regulation of the cryptocurrency could strengthen its long-term position despite immediate economic and regulatory hurdles.
