Today, mailing list moderators for Bitcoin developers Ruben Somsen, Bryan Bishop, and Warren Togami announced that they are migrating their mailing list to Google Groups.

“The Bitcoin developer mailing list has been migrated from Sourceforge.net, where it was originally hosted, to the Linux Foundation, OSUOSL, and is now migrating to Google Groups,” said Bitcoin developer Bryan Bishop.

Existing mailing list subscribers must take action immediately as emails to existing mailing lists will no longer be accepted from February 2024. The new mailing list location can be accessed here.

For those who did not receive an invitation or wish to subscribe manually, alternative options are provided, such as subscribing by email or registering through the online interface using your Google account. “If you missed the invitation and would like to subscribe manually, you have two options,” the announcement said. You can send an email to “bitcoindev+subscribe@googlegroups.com and then reply to the automatic email you will receive (check your spam folder). Alternatively, you can subscribe through the online interface at https://groups.google.com/ g/bitcoindev, using a Google account (not the same as Gmail – you can create a Google account with any email address you want).”

The announcement also emphasized the importance of opting in to receive all messages, encouraging active participation, and maintaining continuity in the conversation to ensure replies are properly connected.

The migration also ensures the preservation and accessibility of your archived mailing list content (no Google account required) through external backups that allow you to view your old mailing lists. It’s important to note that the moderators “are not relying on Google for anything significant here, but are simply using Google as a vehicle to convey information that will already be public.”

Mailing list moderators also want to remind participants to make sure their posts are relevant to everyone to maintain a good signal-to-noise ratio. A list of unchanged mailing list rules can be found here. You can contact the moderators at bitcoindev+owner@googlegroups.com.
