BIP177 suggests that it will remove the decimal point of Bitcoin, which arouses the debate over the user -friendly vs tradition of the Cryptocurrency community.
The long debate on the nominal convention of Bitcoin’s smallest unit was ruled by the introduction of BIP177, the proposal of John Carvalho, a synonym CEO. According to blog.bitfinex.com, this suggests that all decimal points are removed and ‘Bitcoin’ is used as a default display device.
Background of Bitcoin Forces Discussion
Bitcoin (BTC) is divided into very small units, which can promote various economic activities, from high value -added transactions to micro conversion. The best known unit is Satoshi, which represents a 1/100,000,000 bitcoin. The term was first proposed by a user named Ribuck in Bitcointalk.org in 2010.
Over time, ‘Satoshi’ was adopted as a Bitcoin’s atomic unit and in honor of the mysterious founder Satoshi Nakamoto and built a simple cultural language such as ‘Stacking SATS’. However, the alternative unit, ‘Bit’ (corresponding to 100 Satoshi or 1/1,000,000 bitcoin), was also intuitively proposed. Advocates, such as Adam Back, argue that when the price of Bitcoin reaches a million dollars, 1 BIT is the same as $ 1 and simplifies the transition.
Vision of BIP177
The BIP177 proposed by John Carvalho aims to redefine the recognition of Bitcoin by using the smallest device as a standard display. BIP177 is recommended to use an integer that calls each basic device called ‘1 Bitcoin’ instead of displaying a value in a decimal form, as in 0.00004321 BTC.
This approach solves the chaos caused by hydrophobicity and complex fountains so that everyday users can access Bitcoin further. BIP177 does not change consensus rules or hot chain data, but challenges a firm ‘SAT’ term because it requires a synchronized change in the wallet interface and exchange.
Adoption and challenge
Bitkit Wallet, developed by synonyms, adopted BIP177 for the first time. This user -friendly wallet focuses on improving the Bitcoin ecosystem with its features such as built -in lightning nodes and encrypted cloud backups. By displaying values on sub units such as Bitcoin or MBTC, not BTC, bitkit simplifies user interactions.
Despite its potential advantages, it is not clear whether the BIP177 will get a wide range of acceptance. Historical precedents, such as Segwit and Taproot upgrades, show a long adoption process for technically beneficial changes. Distributed characteristics of the Bitcoin community are having a hard time achieving agreement on such proposals.
Future prospect
Currently, projects such as Spiral, Square, Workit and Cashu are exploring the implementation of BIP177. However, conservative Bitcoin community, which focuses on stability, can resist changes in the user interface. As Bitcoin continues to develop, the BIP177 can open a way for more intuitive experience, but faces a large obstacle to becoming a standard.
Ultimately, the debate on the unit name of Bitcoin reflects the continuous balance between tradition and user -friendliness. Satoshi is culturally important, but adopting ‘bit’ or ‘bitcoin’ can encourage more acceptance. The result of this debate will reveal whether BIP177 can be a turning point of Bitcoin’s usefulness or an interesting concept.
