December 4th Bitfinex Alpha | Bitcoin is surging and the underlying economy also looks solid.
On Bitfinex Alpha
This week on Bitfinex AlphaWe look at how Bitcoin hit a year-to-date high above $42,000 on December 4 and recorded its strongest monthly close since March 2022. We believe this surge is due to the culmination of a variety of factors, including notable changes in futures dynamics. A market compared to the spot market.
In our cumulative volume delta analysis, we see an increase in leverage, which is generally a signal to pay attention, but at the same time a decrease in open interest, especially on the short side. Moreover, futures markets have shown resilience to downturns compared to much less activity in spot markets. Heavy buying in the futures market eliminated short selling in both the BTC and ETH markets, further contributing to the upward pressure.
While this phenomenon is driving prices higher, it shows that downside risks should not be ignored. BTC is currently trading above 1-year, 2-year, 3-year, 5-year and 7-year realized price bands. While these levels now provide effective support for BTC, a violation of the three-year realized price in particular could see the risk of a market capitulation, albeit remote.
The positive BTC price dynamics are occurring against a backdrop of strong economic data, driven by a rebound in US consumer confidence. That said, there are signs of stress in the banking sector, where profits have fallen due to rising loan provisions and unrealized investment losses. However, the U.S. economy remains strong, growing 5.2% in the third quarter, driven by increased business investment and increased state and local government spending. We now believe there is a possibility of a rate cut by the end of May 2024. This view was further strengthened by inflation falling to its lowest level in more than a year and resilient consumer spending and income growth.
In cryptocurrency news last week, the Philippine Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) said it was taking action against Binance for failing to comply with registration and licensing requirements. It said it would give Filipino users three months to withdraw their investments and would also ask Google and Meta to ban Binance ads in the Philippines. In another significant development, Coinbase notified certain users of a subpoena from the Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC). This may mean you need to share your account information.
The subpoenas are part of the CFTC’s broader action against cryptocurrency exchanges for regulatory violations and could target users with accounts at both Coinbase and Bybit, according to the report.
Grayscale, a leading crypto asset management company, is gearing up to compete in the Bitcoin ETF market with a key hire in Invesco, who has deep expertise in ETF product development and will lead Grayscale’s distribution and partnerships. Finally, we report how BTC and Ether futures on the Chicago Mercantile Exchange are widening the spread between next month futures and recent month futures, with futures prices also exceeding current spot prices. This is interpreted as a sign of increased interest from institutional investors in taking leveraged bullish positions, especially ahead of the announcement of the spot Bitcoin ETF.
Happy trading!
