Bitmart will end trading services on August 26 and close the cryptocurrency exchange, which is scheduled to complete operations by January 31, 2027. In a notice posted on its support site, the exchange said it took the decision after evaluating operating conditions, market environment and future strategy, adding that the closure process will be orderly.

As part of the closure plan, BitMart stopped registering new users and accepting deposits. Futures trading has moved to a draw-only mode and the spot market is no longer accepting new orders. The move makes BitMart one of a growing group of cryptocurrency exchanges that have signaled closure in recent months, including BitMEX and Dango.

Key Takeaways

  • Bitmart plans to end trading services on August 26 and cease operations on January 31, 2027, under the announced closure.
  • The exchange has suspended new registrations and deposits. Futures are shrink only and spot trading does not accept new orders.
  • BitMart’s token BMX plummeted after the announcement due to user complaints about slow withdrawal processing.
  • BitMart-affiliated wallets held about $71 million in cryptocurrency assets on Sunday, down from about $102 million on July 6, according to Arkham data.
  • BitMart said some withdrawals may require additional compliance and security checks, which may extend processing times.

Preparation steps and what you can do

BitMart’s notice stated a gradual outage rather than an immediate outage. Onboarding has already been halted. New user registrations and deposits are no longer accepted. For existing users, this change primarily affects how they can add funds or initiate new transactions on the platform.

Access to transactions is also restricted. Futures trading is a contraction-only mode. This means that instead of increasing your position, you can only reduce it. On the spot side, the exchange said the market was closed to new orders, effectively halting new spot trading activity while the company relaxed.

The exchange also clarifies that withdrawal processing may change during the process. BitMart said some withdrawal requests may be subject to additional compliance and security reviews, which may result in extended processing times. This is especially relevant for users who have already reported delays following the shutdown announcement.

BMX falls as withdrawals raise complaints.

BitMart’s native token, BMX, has seen steep losses since the announcement, with the token trading at around $0.09464 at the time of this writing, down nearly 70% from around $0.31 late Friday. BMX reportedly fell as low as $0.1058 on Saturday morning before continuing its downward trend, recovering briefly before later falling below $0.10.

Along with the token’s drastic price adjustments, some users have reported withdrawal delays via X. The post mentions longer than usual processing times, including claims that Tether USD (USDT) withdrawal requests have been pending for hours.

Arkham’s on-chain attribution data adds another layer to the story. Arkham’s explorer shows BitMart’s wallet holding about $71 million in cryptocurrency assets on Sunday, compared to about $102 million on July 6. The analysis highlighted in Arkham data includes approximately $41.5 million in WFI tokens on WeFi and approximately $91,000 in tracked USDT balances. Wallet properties do not automatically determine what portion is readily available for withdrawal at any given moment, but do provide a snapshot of the assets still associated with the address operated by BitMart.

Token Confusion: BMX vs BitMEX Development

In the days following the news, some users on X appeared to be confusing BitMart’s BMX token with BitMEX’s token and exit process. In one widely circulated post, Chinese-speaking community participants discussed the story of the exchange’s closure online, marking a decline in the price of BMX.

The response then pointed out that the closure date being discussed does not match BitMart’s timeline and appears to reflect BitMEX’s own timeline for announcing its own closure. Previous reports mentioned the date of BitMEX’s shutdown and reported that BitMEX’s token, BMEX, plummeted immediately after the notification.

Several other users in the Chinese-speaking cryptocurrency community have also reportedly confused BMX with BitMEX. It was not immediately clear whether the disruption had a direct impact on BMX trading volume or flow, but the episode highlights common problems during exchange closures. Market participants may react to similar assets and headlines without seeing which places the news actually affects.

Why BitMart’s Closure Matters Beyond a Single Platform

BitMart’s decision reflects a broader trend of contraction in the cryptocurrency derivatives and centralized exchange ecosystem. The termination of the platform will take place with immediate effect. This means that new deposits will be halted, order flow will be restricted and users will have to focus on withdrawals. But there are also secondary consequences about liquidity, perceptions of storage risk, and how traders price the tail risk of access during periods of contraction.

For market participants, timelines are as important as headlines. BitMart’s approach of ending trading on August 26, continuing operations for a longer period, and planning a final outage by January 31, 2027, means its risk profile is likely to change in stages. At the beginning of the process, users mainly manage account access and withdrawal reliability. Later, as the remaining scope of operations narrows, liquidity and settlement mechanisms may become key concerns.

In this case, the processing time may not be the same for all assets and requests, according to user reports and the possibility of additional withdrawal reviews mentioned by BitMart. Traders watching BMX (or any token associated with the exchange narrative) may need to consider the fact that token movements may be amplified by sentiment, confusion, and non-fundamental market behavior during closing news cycles.

Readers should monitor whether withdrawal processing stabilizes once withdrawals begin and whether BitMart provides any further operational updates as the company approaches the August 26 trading close. Remaining uncertainties are how consistently withdrawals for various asset types will be processed and whether additional compliance or security steps will materially extend users’ timelines.
