Traditionally, the numbers have been very large, and the larger the investment required, the more difficult it is for companies to enter and remain competitive. Some industries are still moving toward requiring greater investment and capacity to achieve scale. Today, building a new, cutting-edge semiconductor facility is so expensive, estimated at up to $30 billion, that only a handful of companies remain in the once-dozen business.
