Celo, which is compatible with the EVM, voted in July last year to transition its Layer 1 network to an Ethereum Layer 2 chain. After eight months of evaluation, the Celo community Layer 2 network using Optimism Office

Stack joins Optimism’s so-called “superchain” ecosystem alongside Base, Zora, Mode, and other Ethereum Layer 2 networks.
Celo users will continue to be able to use their native USDT and USDC stablecoins for gas fees on the new network, but token bridging between Ethereum and Celo will soon be easier. Transactions will also be faster, with throughput increasing by 50% and block times being reduced from 5 seconds to 2 seconds, according to Celo’s announcement.
“For most EVM-compatible chains, it’s becoming increasingly difficult to justify a standalone position in a market where the Ethereum scaling roadmap speaks for itself,” Celo core developer and cLabs CTO Marek Olszewski told The Block last year.
The Celo team expects to launch the mainnet in “early winter 2024,” according to the announcement.
