Keplr, the most popular wallet app in the Cosmos blockchain ecosystem, is adding support for Ethereum and Layer 2 blockchains, strengthening its position as a multi-layer wallet solution.
Keplr, founded by Tony Yun and Josh Lee in 2021, has become the dominant wallet app on Cosmos, currently boasting over 1 million monthly active users. The latest integration is expected to allow users to view and manage their Ethereum-based assets directly within the Keplr interface.
According to Lee, the integration of Keplr and Ethereum support is expected to reach a wider user base, especially those operating on Cosmos and chains that are based on execution environments such as the Ethereum Virtual Machine (EVM). It also aims to support new modular projects that leverage both ecosystems.
“A significant portion of Kepler users are currently using both Kepler and EVM wallets, and we are trying to serve as an emerging modular community for them,” Lee told The Block. Lee further explained that the Cosmos software stack has been used to develop modular projects such as Initia, Dymension, Saga, and Celestia.
Modular community support
These modular projects are based on Cosmos. The various rollups that run on these networks can typically be EVM-based and require the use of a wallet like MetaMask. The users of these rollups represent an additional user group that Keplr is trying to reach by integrating EVM compatibility into their wallet.
“It was a natural progression for Keplr to support them,” Lee added.
EVM support for cryptocurrency wallets is expected to be released in beta within a few weeks, but a specific timeline has not yet been confirmed.
Lee outlined the technical aspects of adding EVM support to Kepler, including the use of EIP-6963 for multi-injection providers, which will allow Keplr to be used concurrently without disrupting cross-wallet usage patterns or forcing users to switch between wallets.
He further explained that Kepler’s initial focus was to build a cross-chain, multi-chain wallet, and that EVM integration is a major step in that direction. He added that EVM support is intended to serve existing Kepler users who use EVM wallets, rather than compete with MetaMask.
