More than 20 major cryptocurrency organizations have come together to petition for an official Bitcoin emoji, highlighting its cultural impact on society.
More than 20 influential cryptocurrency organizations have united to advocate for a new purpose in the digital space: the introduction of Bitcoin emojis. Their mission is to insert Bitcoin’s symbol into the digital communication lexicon, proposing Bitcoin’s presence on keyboards around the world.
The push for Bitcoin emojis has been led by prominent cryptocurrency lender Nexo and has garnered support from a variety of industry stalwarts, including BTC Inc, Bitget, and Chainalytic. Dubbed the ‘Bitcoin Deserves an Emoji’ movement, the campaign marks a significant step forward in mainstream recognition of Bitcoin’s triple identity as a currency, technology and cultural phenomenon.
The movement is currently developing through a 50-day petition hosted on Change.org, which will lead to a formal proposal to the Unicode Consortium within the 2024 submission period. This effort, previously rejected in 2020, highlights the ubiquity of blockchain in everyday life and symbolizes the community’s unwavering resolve.
The Coalition’s goals go beyond mere digital representation. It celebrates the shared values and cultural fabric that Bitcoin is woven into. According to Unicode, 92% of the global digital community uses emoji to communicate, and the inclusion of Bitcoin emoji marks a natural evolution in line with the technological advancements of our time.
Nexo’s Kosta Kantchev, BTC Inc’s David Bailey and Brink’s Mike Schmidt expressed support for the plan, citing the technological impact of Bitcoin and the need for a universal symbol that resonates with its universal utility.
In line with the goal of promoting understanding and adoption of digital currencies, this initiative is a collaborative effort between large companies including Polygon, Brave, and Unstoppable Domains. Their collective voice helps us expand the scope of the initiative and work to solidify Bitcoin’s place in everyday discourse.
The movement invites the global community to join this historic effort. By signing the petition and promoting it, individuals can contribute to awareness of Bitcoin’s legacy and future. Those interested can find more information and participate in the campaign at bitcoinemoji.org.
As we move closer to realizing this plan, the cryptocurrency community awaits a response from the Unicode Consortium with bated breath, hoping that Bitcoin emoji will soon become a fixture in our digital narrative.
