Play’n GO released the first installment of the Rich Wilde series in January 2016 with Riche Wilde and The Book of the Dead. The series is based on older paperback pulp novels from the 1920s and ’30s, when characters like Doc Savage exploded in popularity. The genre was reintroduced in 1999 with films like The Mummy, and in 2016 it was ready for a new medium.
The next chapter in the Rich Wilde series wasn’t added until 2019 with Tome of Madness, when the company used H.P. Lovecraft’s novel as inspiration. 2020 saw the release of Shield of Athena, and 2021 brought two installments of the Riche Wilde series to Play’n GO, with Amulet of the Dead debuting in April and Wandering City releasing in November.
The company then put the pirate adventurer back on the shelves until May 2024, when it released the Rich Wilde and the Tome of Insanity slot. This slot again relies on Lovecraft’s supernatural musings. The game even begins with a quote from Lovecraft explaining: “He knows where the old one broke through and where it will break through again. He knows the stars are aligning and the gaze of madness is once again turned to pitch black chaos.” This quote refers to Yog-Sothoth, a fictional cosmic being that appears in several of the author’s novels. This quote in particular is taken from The Dunwich Horror, published in 1929.

The slot utilizes a cascading mechanism that removes symbols associated with winning combinations, allowing new symbols to slot into the empty spots. But the slot goes one step further and adds 1 increment to the portal meter for every symbol removed. When 8, 16, 30 or 48 symbols are collected, various bonus features are triggered.
- Ruin (8 symbols) – Throws 2 to 4 Book Wilds onto the reels.
- Harvest (16 symbols) – In Book Wilds, destroy symbols at varying distances to place new symbols in their place.
- Abomination (30 symbols) – Upgrades a gem to a ritual item.
- Damnation (48 symbols) – Awards Damnation Free Spins.
When the Damnation Free Spins round begins, you will be presented with three portal features. However, triggering may be overcharged, which may add up to four additional portal features to your tally. If there are no wins after the cascade during the free spins round, the Portal feature will be triggered. A round ends when all portal features are depleted.
There is also an All-Seeing Eyes feature in the base game that allows you to add Book Wilds to the reels. During Damnation Free Spins, this feature can add Yog-Sothoth Wilds and Multiplier Wilds to the reels.

I really love how much attention was put into the story and setting of this game. It’s really worth going to the Play’n GO website and reading the information page for the Rich Wilde and Tome of Insanity slot. It was put together with great care and attention to detail. I wish the game had provided an option to read more lore for nerds like me. Thankfully, the rest of the game lived up to the attention the team put into the story. The graphics are well implemented, the bonus features are attractive and the theme is great. I would give this an overall 10 out of 10.
