- Cryptocurrency meme icon Kabosu has passed away.
- Kabosu became famous in 2010 when a photo of her went viral online.
- Her owner wrote a touching poem to say goodbye to her.
Kabosu, the Japanese Shiba Inu that inspired the “doge” meme trend and eventually became the face of Dogecoin, has passed away peacefully, her owner Atsuko Sato announced on Friday.
Kabosu, who was rescued from an animal shelter in 2008, became an internet sensation in 2010 after a photo of him with his paws crossed and a slight smile spread on Reddit and Tumblr. The image, captioned with phrases in broken English and Comic Sans font, inspired cryptocurrency meme culture and became the official logo for Dogecoin in 2013.

On May 24, Kabosu’s owner shared the news on her blog and Instagram in a somber poem dedicated to her furry companion.
“To all of you who loved Kabosu, on the morning of the 24 May, Kabosu crossed the rainbow bridge. Thank you all so much for your support over the years,” Sato wrote. “She went very peacefully without suffering, as if falling asleep while feeling the warmth of my hands petting her.”
According to the blog post, Kabosu’s farewell party will be held at Flower Kaori in Kotsunomori, Narita City, on May 26, after which Sato plans to organize a fun farewell party at Sakura Furusato Plaza “when the weather gets cooler.”
Kabosu passed away at the age of 18, leaving a permanent mark on the cryptocurrency industry. By being a part of Dogecoin’s success, Kabosu inspired viral dog-themed tokens that spawned vibrant cryptocurrency communities such as Shiba Inu (SHIB) and FLOKI.
