Delta Police, with support from Chainalytic, tracks and freezes millions of dollars in fraudulent wallets through Operation Spincaster, strengthening local law enforcement’s cryptocurrency crime capabilities.

In a strategic move to curb the growing number of cryptocurrency scams, Canada’s Delta has become the latest battleground in the war against digital fraud. According to Chainalytic, local law enforcement partners with Chainalytic are equipped with cutting-edge tools to track and freeze illicit funds as part of Operation Spincaster.

Impact of Operation Spincaster

Operation Spincaster, a pioneering initiative launched by Chainalytic, aims to disrupt and prevent fraud by combining the synergy of public-private sector collaboration and blockchain intelligence. Initially successful on a national scale, the operation has now expanded to Delta, a city with a population of more than 100,000.

The plan, known locally as Operation DeCloak, saw Chainalytic partner with the Delta Police Department on a two-day sprint in September 2024. The operation involved seven law enforcement agencies, including the Royal Canadian Mounted Police and the Vancouver Police Department, as well as two cryptocurrency exchanges. , among other things. This is the second Spincaster sprint in Canada, highlighting the country’s proactive stance against fraud.

Scale of cryptocurrency fraud revealed

During the investigation, investigators identified more than 1,100 victims of cryptocurrency fraud, with losses exceeding US$25 million. This was revealed through a detailed analysis of 240 cryptocurrency addresses. Participating organizations are actively informing victims and working to recover stolen funds.

The success of this effort is due to the transparency of blockchain technology, which allows the team to gather information and investigate fraud related to authorization phishing (a tactic where fraudsters trick users into approving fraudulent transactions).

Expanding law enforcement capabilities

Delta Police Department Cyber Crime Unit has benefited from the training provided and applied new techniques to ongoing investigations to identify additional stolen funds. This included a blacklisted address containing US$1.2 million that was scheduled to be seized by international law enforcement.

Sergeant Jill Long of the Delta Police Department emphasized the importance of collaboration, saying the expertise and tools provided by Chainalytic are invaluable in identifying victims and tracking stolen funds.

Public-private cooperation and blockchain analysis

The success of Operation DeCloak highlights the power of collaboration between the public and private sectors to combat fraud by leveraging advanced blockchain intelligence. The plan highlights the need for continued vigilance and proactive action in monitoring and freezing funds associated with fraudulent activities.

Chainalysis is committed to strengthening the cryptocurrency ecosystem’s ability to combat illicit activity and continues to work with law enforcement and exchanges to further these efforts.

Fighting Cryptocurrency Fraud

Chainalytic provides comprehensive cryptocurrency investigation solutions to help uncover leads, analyze financial flows, and disrupt illicit activity. This solution helps law enforcement agencies and exchanges effectively combat cryptocurrency fraud and other cybercrimes.

Through international collaboration and cutting-edge technology, Chainalytic continues to support the fight against cryptocurrency fraud, ensuring a safer digital environment for communities around the world.
