On October 24, 2024, Ethereum developers gathered virtually for All Core Developers Execution (ACDE) Call #199, chaired by Tim Beiko, Director of Protocol Support at the Ethereum Foundation. As reported by Galaxy.com, these bi-weekly meetings play a pivotal role in discussing and coordinating changes to Ethereum’s execution layer (EL).
Pectra Devnet 4 and 5 Development
The meeting reaffirmed that the upcoming Pectra upgrade will include EIP 7742, with discussion on doubling the block gas limit over two years after the upgrade without a hard fork. Developers released Pectra Devnet 4 on October 18, 2024, identifying issues with clients such as Eragon and EthereumJS. Meanwhile, Pectra Devnet 5 preparations included gas cost changes in EIP 2537 and updates to EIP 7685 and EIP 7702.
Discussion on increasing block gas limit
A proposal to gradually double the block’s gas limit over two years has been discussed. Some developers, such as Nethermind’s Ben Adams, supported EIP 7790, but others called for further research and testing. Before increasing block gas capacity, concerns were raised about the implementation of related EIPs such as EIP 4444 and EIP 7623.
Error Codes and Reverting November Call Schedule
Felix Lange suggested adding an official revert error code for contract calls to the Execution API, with the goal of standardization across clients. The call also addressed the ACD call schedule for November, with the decision to maintain the call scheduled for November 21 and cancel test calls on November 11 and 18.
