Ethereum’s All Core Developers Consensus Call #145, held on October 31, 2024, included a comprehensive review of ongoing projects and future plans for blockchain development. The biweekly meeting, chaired by Ethereum Foundation researcher Alex Stokes, serves as a platform for developers to discuss and coordinate changes to the Ethereum consensus layer, known as the Beacon Chain.
Spectra Devnet 4 Update
During the call, EF DevOps Engineer Barnabas Busa shared an update on Pectra Devnet 4. He noted that there are no major issues with Devnet and that all client teams are able to propose blocks successfully. A public testnet called Mekong was launched based on the Pectra Devnet 4 specification and features 110 nodes and approximately 100,000 active validators. The Mekong is expected to operate for several months, providing a testing ground for new network features.
Ready for Pectra Devnet 5
Developers also discussed preparations for Pectra Devnet 5. Several pull requests (PRs) were highlighted, including PR #3900, which introduces a new attestation type, and PR #3767, which implements rate limiting recommendations for data requests. These changes are designed to simplify the process and improve compatibility. Additional PRs are being developed to improve execution layer requests to the consensus layer.
PeerDAS Devnet Updates
After a major network reorganization, the end of PeerDAS Devnet 3 has been confirmed. The Prysm team is investigating this incident and future PeerDAS devnets are on hold until after Devcon, the upcoming Ethereum developer conference. Discussion continues as to whether PeerDAS should be included as part of the Fusaka upgrade or as a standalone Ethereum Improvement Proposal (EIP).
New EIP: Updated withdrawal credentials
The new EIP, proposed by Lucas Saldanha of Consensys, aims to allow validators to update their withdrawal credentials without exiting. This proposal, EIP 7800, introduces a new execution request type ‘0x03’ that enables credential updates via smart contracts. It is not currently included in the Pectra upgrade, but is a candidate for future consideration.
The next ACDC meeting is scheduled for November 14th, but will be canceled due to the Devcon conference, which is attended by many developers.
