Core developers deployed a Dencun upgrade incorporating proto-danksharding (EIP-4844) on the Goerli test network, serving as a precursor to the expected mainnet launch.

The Dencun upgrade forked on the Goerli testnet around 1:35 AM ET, as confirmed by core developers in a live stream. The upgrade faced obstacles, including a potential “chain split” due to issues with the clients’ ability to sync with each other. The client team must investigate the issue and issue a fix. A final confirmation is awaited from the network.

It is worth noting that client issues frequently occur on testnet during significant upgrades. Typically, client teams resolve sync bugs before mainnet launch.

In preparation for this transition, the development team chose a phased approach, initially implementing the upgrade on various testnets.

Today it was deployed on Goerli, the first testnet for the Dencun upgrade. The next implementation steps include the activation of Dencun on the Sepolia testnet on January 31st and the Holesky testnet on February 7th. The final mainnet launch is expected by the end of Q1 2024.

What is Tenkun?

A key feature of this Dencun deployment (from Goerli) is the introduction of EIP-4844. EIP-4844 is a new transaction mechanism known as temporary blob or proto-danksharding. This approach allows Ethereum nodes to temporarily store and access off-chain data, reducing storage demands. This is expected to significantly lower transaction costs for Ethereum dApps, particularly benefiting layer 2 rollup chains.
