Ethereum is currently accepting applications for the Next Billion Fellowship Cohort 5, a program designed to leverage blockchain technology to solve real-world problems.
Ethereum announced the opening of applications for the fifth cohort of its Next Billion Fellowship program. According to the Ethereum blog, the initiative, which aims to highlight and support projects that leverage Ethereum’s blockchain technology to solve social problems, is now seeking new applicants.
Understanding the Next Billion Fellowship
The Next Billion Fellowship program is designed to highlight compelling stories that demonstrate the impact Ethereum is having on communities around the world. Past fellows have worked on a variety of projects, including implementing digital badges and wallets for Scouts around the world, strengthening crop insurance for Kenyan farmers, and leveraging decentralized systems amid the humanitarian crisis in Syria.
The program will last six months and provide participants with project funding, mentorship, and access and exposure to Ethereum’s extensive network. By focusing on real-world applications, this fellowship seeks to transform Ethereum from a mere technological concept into a practical tool for social good.
Application details
Interested candidates are invited to apply by January 12, 2025. Submissions received after this deadline will be considered in subsequent cohorts. The application process is designed to identify innovative projects that can leverage the power of Ethereum to create meaningful change.

- November 2024 – January 12, 2025: Application period for Cohort 5, rolling applications will be reviewed for Cohort 6.
- January 2025 – April 2025: Review of applications for Cohort 5 and ongoing evaluation for Cohort 6.
- April 2025 – October 2025: Fellowship program for Cohort 5 along with review of Cohort 6 applications.
- September 2025 – March 2026: Fellowship Program for Cohort 6.

Ethereum will also offer two “Office Hours” sessions during the application period for interested parties to learn more about the program. This session will be held on December 11, 2024 at 07:00 UTC and January 8, 2025 at 15:00 UTC. Those who wish to participate can register online.
